New Orleans Win Again
Clubs - Men's DI Clubs

The New Orleans Rugby Club moved to 2-0-1 with a convincing 37-19 defeat of the Austin Huns in Louisiana Saturday.

After every game in the Red River Conference was called off last week due to cold and snow, this was the first league game for both teams in three weeks. Even so, New Orleans captain Jeff Reuther said he was happy to see his team in action.

“We’ve got 16 great games to play, instead of four, which is what we had last year,” said Reuther, referring to New Orleans’s participation in the now defunct South DI league last season. “So we’re pretty happy to be playing and playing competitive games. I think there’s a lot of parity in this league. The Huns came all the way out here and played really hard. They are a good team.”

Inside center Bobby Johns earned Man of the Match honors for New Orleans, and James Sims led the forwards with a strong performance.

“James is one of those guys, came from the University of Alabama, and was playing on our B side, and he’s worked his way up and was just a big factor,” said Reuther. “We played pretty well overall. We had some good continuity but it seemed like just as we got something going, we would get a penalty for diving on the ball or in from the side. So what we did get was some big runs and big one-off plays. That helped us.”

Also winning Saturday was the other Austin team, the Blacks, who thrashed Fort Worth 58-0, improving to 2-0. The Dallas Reds also won 58-0, beating The Woodlands and improving to 2-0-1.
